During the advent period Constance is turned into a cosy Christmas town for several hundred thousands of visitors each year. From November, 27th right up until two days before Christmas Eve the most atmospheric and loveliest Christmas market of the region is celebrated with inspiring and enchanting moments of the festive season. It stretches from the old quarter to the harbour and even on-board the ‘Christmas ship’. More than 170 craftsmen, tradesmen and cooks spread out their wares with finesse: original gifts for Christmas, culinary delights from all the corners of the world and steaming punch. Festive Christmas music gives the Christmas market a lively atmosphere. Father Christmas, pony rides and carousels will make children’s eyes beam. Guesthouse Centro, within a vicinity of 150 metres to the market stalls, is one of the first addresses of the festive season.
Sense and Sights
Since 1998 the lakeside Christmas market has been a trysting place for visitors and locals. Arts and crafts such as glass blowers, glass grinders, metal smiths and potters show their handiwork. Visitors may take delight in Christmas decoration in all sizes and variations, stars, angels, putti, and uniquely ornamented Christmas balls. Each year the local press runs a competition which market stand is serving the tastiest mulled wine. All sorts of culinary delights can be found; the spicy scent of bratwurst, German fried sausage, is wafting through the market streets. The fragrance of delicious hot chestnuts, Swiss cheese fondue, and sizzling ox scraps as well as a variety of Mediterranean, North African and of course regional specialities attract the hungry and venturesome.
Christmas on the shores of Lake Constance
Another attraction is the `Christmas Ship’ berthed in port of Constance harbour. This vessel of the “White Fleet” of Lake Constance lures visitors on-board for warm up in the glow of sparkling lights. The Christmas market on the shores of Lake Constance is particularly captivating in the evening, with its myriad of twinkling fairy lights. Also very popular during the cold season is the mulled wine tower, the “Glühweinturm” in the city’s park right next to the harbour. From its platform you have an open view on quiescent Lake Constance lying calmly under the stars and onto the Christmas market and harbour area.
The “White Fleet” of Lake Constance has winter boat trips on offer with festive music and Christmas Coffee or Christmas Dinner. On Dec, 6th , that is St Nicholas Day in Germany, even Santa Claus himself comes aboard and surprises well-behaved kids. Guided city tours will bring you into the mood for the advent season. Renowned guides lead you onto a time walk through Constance medieval alleys and find the most beautiful cribs and nativity scenes. In addition chapels and churches of the old town, or alternative tours through medieval Constance, celebrating its 600 year anniversary of the medieval Council of Constance (1414-1418) promise unforgettable experiences.
